Yellow Magic Orchestra - BGM returns on 180g black vinyl through Music On Vinyl. Originally released in 1981, YMO’s fourth studio album arrived at a point when Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi were pushing beyond the bright, tightly engineered technopop that had made them internationally influential. Building on the experimentation of X∞ Multiplies, BGM moves further into synthesizers, drum computers, sequencing and unusual rhythmic structures.

The album is notably concerned with atmosphere and texture. Programmed rhythms can feel stark and mechanical, but the group continually offsets that precision with melody, unexpected studio detail and a playful approach to sound design. The record’s combination of lyrics, samples, electronic percussion and synthesizer arrangements helped broaden the vocabulary of early-1980s electronic pop, while retaining the unmistakable personality that separated YMO from their European and American contemporaries.

Among its best-known tracks are 1000 Knives, a reworking of a composition closely associated with Sakamoto, and Cue, alongside the rhythmic experimentation of Mass, Rap Phenomena and U・T. The famous handclap sound on “1000 Knives” became especially recognisable in the sampling culture of the 1980s and early 1990s. Heard as a whole, BGM captures a band treating pop structure as a framework for increasingly adventurous electronic production.

This edition is pressed on 180g black vinyl and includes a 4-page booklet. It presents the complete ten-track album, from opening track “Ballet” through the closing “Loom”, and offers a new physical edition of a record widely regarded as an important turning point in Yellow Magic Orchestra’s development.
